Mother’s day week is w/c 29th February - Come along and spend some time with your child at the nursery.

Illness

We are still having a few bugs going around. There have been a few children with high temperatures. We have also had some children off with chesty coughs and ear infections.

I know it can be hard to arrange for your child to be away from nursery and we don’t do it to make your lives difficult!

We ask children to stay away from nursery so we can minimise the spread to other children and we hate making those phone calls, but we have to do what we think is right. All rooms are continuing to sterilize all toys and equipment being used each day.

Interactive Learning Diary

Don’t forget to check out all the exciting things your child has done this week, on their ILD profile.

We aim to put at least one observation up per week.

Incident report procedure

Aim of policy

To give guidance on when and how to complete an incident report.

Points to consider

An incident report is a report giving all of the details of an important incident that has taken place in the nursery (or elsewhere too). For example; a child arriving with an odd bruise, or a team member acting inappropriately, or a parent makes a complaint, or a child telling a story of how they had been left home alone. See the children protection policies and risk assessment policy.

Castle Daycare and Preschool aim to achieve this by:

If something happens in the nursery that has staff alarmed or needing to question something, we always write an incident report. An incident report will get all of the facts out and will keep important information at hand for reference. It may even be the difference between saving a child’s life or future.

The manager may ask staff to write an incident report and they will need to know what to write. Below is a set of guidelines on how to write an incident report.

How to write an incident report

  1. All incident reports are to be clearly printed or typed.

  1. Complete the report thoroughly and accurately, including all relevant important information about the incident and persons involved (time, place, date, names, and address).

  1. Be concise and to the point, while still being thorough and complete.

  1. DO NOT write from emotions – facts only, remember that anything written is considered an official document).

  1. DO NOT speculate – we are reporting facts, not opinions or predictions.

  1. Complete the report IMMEDIATELY after the incident – details fade fast.

  1. Take notes if necessary and flesh out the details later.

  1. Remember all reports are official legal documents and could be used in judicial hearings and a court of law.

  1. If your report is not satisfactory, management will require that you rewrite it.

Kind regards,

Week Commencing 15th February 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Forest School

During this week’s forest school we observed the effects of the wind because some trees had been knocked down during the windy weather the day before and were laying on the floor. We discovered some animal footprints and we thought it could be the Gruffalo, who went for a walk in the morning.

We had breadsticks with yummy hot chocolate. Then Lee taught us how to make a forest school necklace just using a manual saw, a log and a piece of string. We had to do it one at a time as Hector was helping us to saw the log and we had to be very careful as it is a very sharp tool. After everyone had a go, we all had our own brilliant necklace!!

Parents Evening

A reminder that it is Parents Evening on Thursday 17th March.

Pop in anytime between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and have a chat with your child’s Key Person.

Come along and spend some time with your child at the nursery.

We will also be having a Mother’s Day tea party on Friday 4th of March, so come along and be spoilt!

Procedure for accidents and incidents

Aim of policy

Castle Daycare and Preschool have in place a rigorous procedure to deal with accidents and incidents. See the current nursery risk assessments.

Points to consider

At all times staff dealing with accidents must wear the appropriate protective clothing – disposable gloves and aprons wherever it is required or reasonably practical.

Castle Daycare and Preschool aim to achieve this by:

Minor accidents/incidents

·       Staff member present assesses the injury.

·       The injury is treated by qualified first aider.

·       The child is resettled and observed.

·       The accident/incident is recorded on the accident form.

·       The Manager should be informed at the earliest opportunity.

·       At the end of the child’s session the parent/carer is advised of the accident/incident and what action was taken.  The parent must sign the form to verify they have been advised of the accident.

·       If the parent/carer is not willing to sign the form the Manager must be alerted immediately.

Major accidents/incidents

·       Never move the child - unless their life is in imminent danger by not moving them.

·       Call an ambulance.

·       Appropriate treatment should be administered by a trained first aider

·       The parent/carer must be contacted.

·       If the ambulance crew take the child to hospital a senior member of staff will accompany the child to hospital, if the parents are not available, and the parent/carers should be kept informed.

·       The accident form or serious incident form must be completed with the parent/carers signature.

In the case of a major accident the details must be reported to the Health and Safety representative, Ofsted, Social Care and RIDDOR (if applicable)

ALL accidents and incidents must be monitored.  A risk assessment may need to be completed and/or reviewed in the event of an accident or incident.

Attention should be given to the following:

  • Was normal practice being followed?
  • Were there any unusual circumstances/conditions?
  • Were safety rules/advice being followed?
  • Has a similar incident occurred previously?
  • What conclusions can be made from this?
  • How can the incident be prevented from re-occurring

Accident forms should be checked every month by the manager to assess if any patterns are occurring, or if any action is needed to be taken to ensure accidents do not occur again. The manager will use this information to take appropriate steps to manage risks.

Kind Regards

Week Commencing 4th February 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Forest School

During this week’s forest school we had lots of fun working together to build a den! We supported each other to carry the sticks as they were very big! We looked for sticks with lots of leaves on to make a shelter at the top of our den. We were all very proud of what we had created and sat inside the den to have our snack and hot chocolate. After we had our snack we found lots of different things to decorate our den, we found different types of leaves, pine cones and sticks, we all had lots of fun!

Zoo Lab

All the children enjoyed Zoo Lab, they were able to learn and investigate lots of different animals. Zoo lab gained all the children’s attention and the majority of them were excited and curious about what saw!

Temperature reduction medicine administration policy

Aim of policy

To ensure that the administration of non-prescription temperature reducing medication (such as Calpol) is administered correctly and safely to any children who require it.

Points to consider

Paracetamol Suspension will only be administered in an emergency and with permission obtained from a parent or authorised guardian. This policy refers to EYFS 2014: 3.44-3.46

Castle Daycare and Preschool aim to achieve this by:

Temperature reducing medication will be kept on site as an emergency provision only and must be kept in a labelled container in the medication cupboard.

Temperature reducing medication is for the use of the reduction of body temperature in nursery children who have a body temperature exceeding 37.5°C unless the child’s core body temperature is naturally lower, this should be requested in writing by the parent.

If temperature reducing medication is required due to a raised temperature you should:

  • Contact the parent to request further permission and check that medication has not already been given. This is to ensure a child does not overdose.
  • Complete a medication form, writing in the parent’s signature box as the top of the form that permission was given verbally and also previously given in the registration form.
  • Check the dosage given on the side of the medication to determine the dose required.
  • Only senior staff are allowed to give medicine.
  • Senior staff to give medication and record on medication form.
  • The medication form must be witnessed by another staff member.
  • If the temperature does not reduce within a reasonable amount of time (this will also depend on how high the child’s temperature is) then the parent will need to collect the child.

To help lower the child’s raised temperature:

Take off the child’s outer clothes, leaving them in simply their vest and pants/ nappy. (Cover with a cotton sheet if they shiver). Please keep privacy in mind.

Keep the room at a normal temperature (18- 20°C) or cooler by opening windows and use a fan to circulate the air, but do not aim it directly at the child.

Give plenty of fluids to drink.

Sponge the child’s body and head- not hands and feet- with lukewarm water with a face flannel.

When judging the child’s fitness to stay at nursery take into account the well child policy.

Kind Regards

Jess Smith
