Muddy Puddle Walk
The
Pre-school children are taking part in the Save the Children - Muddy Puddle
Walk on Friday 27th April. It’s a great way for us to get active and explore the world around us and
the money we raise will help save children’s lives all around the world. There
will be a donation pot in the hallway and a pot for the Pre-school walkers in
their room. Any donation would be appreciated and will help us raise money
towards such a great cause.

Our Policy of the Week:
Assessment policy
Aim of policy
To ensure all staff
understand and are familiar with our assessment processes.
Points to consider
Assessment is an ongoing
process that starts as soon as the child starts the setting. It is important to
celebrate the child’s achievements and support any weaknesses so that we can
“close the gap” in any developmental delays.
Assessment is best if done
with parents and professionals such as health visitors or other settings a
child may attend.
Childcare and Learning Group aim to achieve this
by:
When a child starts the
setting the key person asks the parent to complete an ‘all about me’ document
outlining the child’s needs and interests. Along with the verbal communication
from the parents the key person uses this information to help settle the child
and family into the setting.
Using the information the
key person has learnt about the child they will be able to plan regular
activities and complete observations on the child. Next steps will be set for
the child so that the key person is always looking at how to support future
development.
Activities have extension
and support options so they can be adapted to meet the needs of the group of
children taking part.
Four times a year the key
person will formally assess the child’s progress. If a child is not where they
are expected for their age the key person may speak to the SENCO or Gifted and
Talented Coordinator for support and advice.
The manager will use the
cohort assessment to see if all of the child’s needs are being met. For example
if funded two year olds are not reaching the expected developmental milestones
the manager will work with the key person and other agencies to assess why is
this and put actions into place to close the gap.
By using a web based
learning diary the parents are able to access their own child’s observations as
often as they like. They are also able to add their own observations, photos
and videos so that we can work together to create a whole picture of the
child’s learning journey.
It is important that staff
understand the EYFS well and have a good understanding of child development in
order for them to be able to correctly identify who is not reaching/exceeding
their expected developmental milestones. Staff are supported to do this through
a solid induction process, by being supported to gain a level 3 (or higher)
qualification if they have not already done so and by attending ongoing
training.
The two year check is an important part of the
assessment process.
The Early Years Foundation
Stage (EYFS) requires that parents and carers must be supplied with a short
written summary of their child’s development in the three prime learning and
development areas of the EYFS: Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
Physical Development; and Communication and Language; when the child is aged
between 24-36 months. The Early Years Foundation Stage gives more guidance on the
two year check.
In summary:
We observe the children:
• Upon arrival at the setting
• Daily/weekly with regular
observations
We assess the children:
• Six weeks after they start
(base line assessment)
• Four times a year using the
Childcare & Learning Group Assessment cycle
• Children are also assessed
thought out the year using the ILD online assessment systems
We share assessments with parents:
• Between their second and
third birthday, through the ‘Two Year Old Check’
• Before moving on to school,
through the setting Transfer summary.
• Additionally on request
Assessments may also be
shared with other professionals such as Health Visitors and other settings that
the child attends.
The assessments are
recorded on our online system. All of our families are welcome to come into the
setting and use our iPads to see their child’s profile.
